Because it’s Christmas-time, and because I like strange and silly and obscure Christmas music — like the conversation I had yesterday about The Royal Guardsmen and “Snoopy’s Christmas” — I thought it only fair to point out a Christmas song that I’ve liked since I first heard it.

It’s “Winter Wonderland,” done in the style of Led Zeppelin’s “Misty Mountain Hop.”

The musical duo behind this completely mental — and completely entertaining — admixture is Fleming & John.

When I first heard the song three years ago, after I’d moved to Baltimore, the song was easily found on their website. Alas, no longer.

However. This song is available here.

Some may find it surprising that I like the song, since I’m not really a Zeppelin fan. …

After writing about my indifference to Led Zeppelin two weeks ago, I have to admit that this cover of “Stairway to Heaven” is one of the niftiest things I’ve heard in a long while. It’s by an Australian Beatles tribute band, the Beatnix.

What I especially like about the video is the way the footage looks washed out and aged, as if it were something that could have been from one of the Beatles’ early appearances on, say, the Ed Sullivan Show.

Yeah, there are a couple of things that aren’t accurate — the bassist is right-handed, for instance — but overall it has the right feel, the right sound. Of course, the Beatle-esque sound to “Stairway” only shows what a muddled, lyrical …

A reader dropped me an e-mail yesterday.

Was I, he wanted to know, excited about the Led Zeppelin reunion?

As I wrote back, I’m indifferent. It’s not even ambivalence — I simply don’t care. I have a couple of their CDs, but in the end, I’m completely indifferent.

I don’t change the radio station when I hear a Led Zeppelin song, but neither do I go out of my way to listen to the Zep. Except for “Kashmir,” I am simply indifferent to their music.

Yes, I think it’s a damn shame that Cameron Crowe couldn’t license “Stairway to Heaven” for Almost Famous, but as much as I love that movie I will say that it is bloated. Just a little. But still bloated.

The …

I wrote about this, about a year ago, but with Christmas on the horizon I thought I’d mention it again for new readers in the audience. :)

There’s a musicial duo — Fleming & John — that does a version of the classic song, “Winter Wonderland,” in the style of Led Zeppelin’s “Misty Mountain Hop.”

There I was, driving to work, listening to Chris Emry and Michael Filippelli on 100.7, and they played this song. And it was so wrong, and yet it was so… right. It was perfect, it was note perfect, and it was amazing.

It’s a free download from their website. Grab it while you can, and download it from here. You’ll thank me for it later. ;)

Okay, no frelling clue how I got this…

Yeah, no idea.

Don’t misunderstand. I like Led Zeppelin. I’ll listen to their music. But, yeah. Yeah.
